The Journey of the Teapot... (Drawing Elective)

Sustained Measured Drawings.

Fine Liner Pen and Ink

Pencil (first ever measured drawing!)

Elective

I chose the Drawing Elective for my 1st year over jewellery, millinery and photography because I felt quite under-confident with my drawing abilities, I hoped the elective would visually improve my drawings.
From the various activities that were demonstrated over the 4 days, I will be definitely continuing the use of two methods I have learnt.
One being Measured Drawing, this was my first introduction to measured drawing and the idea terrified me! But once I plotted my points and concentrated on the live scene I really surprised myself and was proud of the drawing I produced. The second method I enjoyed was the journey from 2D to 3D and vice versa; we began by drawing an everyday item (teapot) in an abstract style then changed media and made sculptures from wire based on our drawings. These were then projected onto the wall and reverted back to paper. The method could continue and I was impressed with the journey of an initial 3D object.
I am pleased I chose the Drawing Elective as I feel I have learnt some valuable new skills to help me within fashion. I was also beginning to show signs of my own individual style of drawing towards the end of the Elective!

Harvey Nichols - Windows!

The windows for Harvey Nic's this autumn were amazing! Dinosaurs (possibly life-size!) graced the windows behind mannequins, the most fascinating thing was they were structured entirely from coat hangers, even the 'teeth!' An amazing idea of using an everyday household object to create such a statement! Very reflective behaviour of the Credit Crunch!

The Story of O

I have been watching the window of this quirky little vintage shop in Headingly. This dress caught me eye.
The feminine coral colour combined with an almost crepe paper like texture makes this dress original and unusual! I think this dress is gorgeous without being over fussy, the simple vest style top and skimming silhouette tones down the crepe paper texture, beading and graduating hemline into a long train. Beautiful. Shame the shop never appears to be open so i can't take a closer look!

Fashion, Art and Culture Images.

This 3D piece is by Joseph Cornell. I love how he has used such a simple background and added life with a 3D doll attached to the page, made to look like she's suspended with string. The image works as a whole, with a simple but effective appearence.
The side view of my artefact shows the slight relief and build up of mountboard to make it 3D. I also think the real objects, pearls and film reel bring the artefact to life and give it a certain character!

The front view of my artefact (designed to spin around and reveal a double side.) The exhibition information written in the shape of an ear and eyebrow keep within the glamourous character! A simple and non-fussy appearance but effective, like the work of Joseph Cornell.

1st Module!!.. Fashion, Art and Culture.

I found the body of research required for this module difficult, i mainly relied on internet/book resources as visual information and drew very little as I don't find myself very creative in the art side of things.
I think I worked well through the design stage, becoming more creative with ideas, exhausting ideas. I put this down to choosing the right topic of research that inspired me the most (1930's Hollywood Glamour.) I enjoyed the beauty element of that era, bold red lips being the key inspiration I worked on! I believe they defined the era successfully!
I enjoyed the making of my artefact (advertising an exhibition), although I had to make the artefact 3D which I found a challenge, I used a slight relief which I found successfully subtle... Subtle is more in my nature than flamboyant and I believe this showed in my piece. Perhaps I should have challenged myself more...
I was pleased with my final piece and I enjoyed working with the materials, selecting materials carefully to make the artefact look professional and authentic.
I think this was a good project to begin with as it refreshed my mind with the history of fashion and cultures and I learnt a lot of new details within the lectures.

Me, Myself and I!

I became a student this year on the BA (Hons) Fashion Degree, to gain high level skills to enable me to become employable within the fashion industry. I chose 'BA Fashion' rather than 'Fashion promotion' etc to keep my options open and allow myself time to find out what area I am most skillful within.

After completing my National Diploma, Fashion and Clothing, I realised that clothing and the production of garments best suited me. This area requires precision and a neat, methodical way of working, I found that this way of working came naturally to me.

Creativity is a great weakness of mine, with regards to designing/drawing. I enjoy these areas, however I find them incredibly time-consuming and I often become frustrated. For these reasons I have chosen drawing classes as my elective for this year to hopefully improve my artwork and enable me to become more original and think outside the box!

I believe in always striving to submit work which is to the best of my ability and to always meet deadlines! I hope to become more organised this year and to work with greater speed and discipline!
